The Miami Center for Architecture & Design, Inc. (MCAD) promotes awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the ways in which architecture and urban design influence the built environment and enhances the quality of life in the community as well as promoting enhanced discourse about architecture and urban design in Miami. MCAD functions as a resource for the architectural profession as well as the general community. MCAD is home to the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Miami) and operates the Downtown Miami Welcome Center in partnership with the Miami Downtown Development Authority.
Our current exhibit, SPACE SITUATIONS, is now available in 3D on our website and we intend to continue our exhibition schedule, pivoting to online viewing. Current programming includes virtual Book Talks and our virtual Urban Re-Design Series.
In addition to our regular programming, and in collaboration with AIA Miami, MCAD created Active Design Miami (ADM) and Black Architects in the Making (BAM!). Active Design Miami provides architects, urban designers, and municipalities with a manual of 69 evidence-based strategies and policies for creating healthier buildings, streets, and public spaces. ADM has been adopted by Miami-Dade County and 10 of its municipalities. More information can be found at www.activedesignmiami.org. BAM! was developed out of the desire to introduce more African-American children to the idea of architecture as a career. We have created workshops about architecture in under served neighborhoods throughout Miami-Dade County and in 2019 created a higher education scholarship for eligible only to BAM graduates.
